Early labor support, in the comfort of your home…
Let’s get real here, if you are pregnant right now, and are giving birth in the next few months, chances are that you and your partner are going to be heading to your chosen place of birth without a secondary support person.
If this is your first pregnancy, chances are that you may be heading over there fairly early in the labor process. You may be spending some time in triage as the hospital staff waits for your labor to get more “active” before they assign you a room, they may even send you back home and ask you to return later.
Going to the hospital “too early” is very common for first-timers, and also, completely normal. It’s normal to be concerned about the sensations of labor, to want to time your contractions and to ask yourself when it’s really time to pack your things and go. It’s also normal to want to be comforted, to be suggested techniques to help you manage the pain, and for your partner to feel informed to help you navigate the rest of the journey once you are at the hospital or birthing center.
Since secondary support people have not been allowed to attend births, I have been providing at-home early labor support to families to help them set the pace for an easier transition to their chosen place of birth. Families call for me when sensations start getting stronger and they feel the need for additional support. Having the comfort of a trained doula at home, to help you interpret and manage those sensations can help birthing people make informed decisions about staying home a bit longer, or to start moving along. In many instances, this can make for a shorter labor at the hospital, and a reduced need for interventions.
Once you have made the decision to transfer to your chosen place of birth, I remain available by phone or video call to address any issues that may come up for you while you are there and will continue to offer support by answering your questions and by making further suggestions as your labor progresses.

***DISCLAIMER:
As a doula, I do not perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure or fetal heart checks, vaginal exams and other. I am there to provide only physical comfort, emotional support, and advocacy.
I do not make decisions for you. I will help you get the information necessary to make an informed decision. The birthing person is the one to make the decision that is best for them as to when they feel that it is time to transfer to their chosen place of birth.
I do not speak to the hospital staff instead of you regarding matters where decisions are made. I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak on your behalf to the clinical staff.
